Story Draft Chapter 1 Darrel, laying on his back in his bed looked at the ceiling, he had no reason to do it except he had nothing else to do. He noticed the ceiling had the same layout and material as his old office job, he wondered if this facility was once a office before it became a transitional shelter for men. Though from how he came to living here brought back memories of being fired, so he passed at the thought. A few men pass by him, probably coming back from lunch. Darrel knew one of them; average height, brown hair, veteran, never remembered his name. Often had many movies he would lend to the men in the program, the other guy must have been new, browsing the selection he had. Darrel knew the vet had only a few months left before he had to leave, most of the men would miss him much. Darrel wondered who the vet would be replaced with, at least it wouldn't be anyone crazy. It's a good advantage living in the program for so long, older residents stayed in seperate floors from the new residents. He then remembered that one day he would have to leave, so he passed that thought too, so then to distract his mind he thought of the Christmas decorations in the offices, he wondered when they would be taken down. Darrel turned over to his side, looking at his phone. He decided to have a look if anyone contacted him. They did not. Though from looking at the phone he realised it was Tuseday, in which he always has a 2 PM meeting with his case-manager; it was 1:55 PM. Not wanting to be late, Darrel sat up to stretch his arms and yawn; after which he got up and headed to the case managers office. Waiting outside of the door, Darrel knocked, and a voice inside replied "Come in." In doing so Darrel noticed how basic the office was, had a desk a few chairs and a few plants; though of the shelter having to be a non-profit it was no surprise for the lack of other items. The case manager was busy typing away at what looked to be Darrel's file; the case manager was in his late thirties, a little chubby and had abnormally large hands, most people called that particular case manager Floyd. Darrel figured that the man was a bit pushy, but that's all of the case managers here, after all this is transitional shelter so everyone has to leave after a bit, even the staff. Darrel knew that, and could understand most of the descisons carried out here, though that didn't help his situation. "So, did you hear back from any of the companies?" Floyd asked "Nope" "What about the job fair?" "I came in to late for anything related to my experties." "What about the other jobs there?" "Why apply for anything that other people are more qualified for? I don't want to rob them of their jobs." "Doesn't the fact that they were looking for people for those jobs mean that they didn't have enough?" Floyd turned to look at Darrel. "Look" Floyd continued "I know your a bit new here, but that isn't any reason to just lay back and expect things to happen." Darrel became a bit offended by the statement "Who says that I being lazy?! I did exactly what you told me to do, it's not my fault that they are not interested in me!" Floyd calmly explained "I didn't mean to make it sound like your not trying, but 3 jobs gone within the past 2 years doesn't help things." Darrel leans back in the chair. "Hey, that was just the resession, everyone knows that companies cut the newest members first to save costs, that had nothing to do with my performance." Floyd turns back to the computer and types away. "I didn't say it was your fault, I'm just trying to help. I mean you do want out of your situation don't you?" "Well of course I do, everyone here want's that, if they didn't want that they would still be on the streets." "Ok, so why not make the most out of your time here to use the resources to get out of said situation." Darrel leans forward "Because I don't need them, I have job experience and a education. The resources are for those who don't have that advantage, and it should be for them. All I need is a chance for the business to see how good of a Accountant I am." Floyd stopped typing. "And what would a chance be to you?" "I don't know, a interview, maybe a test. Of course they won't do that cause it's too expensive for them" "Or, could it be that your not looking into the best interests for the company?" "Alright, then enlighten me, what am I doing wrong?" Floyd choose not to answer that, fearing it was a waste of time. "Anyways, I got goood news for you." Floyd flips through some papers on the desk. "I got a call from the company SC, they are located on 2nd and Pine and are in need of a Accountant, so getting there wouldn't be a problem." Floyd hands the info papter to Darrel and he gives it a read. "Keep in mind though that this is only a temporary position, so if your ok with that..." Darrel looked through the pages, and it seemed legit. Then he looked at the back and found they were asking for a interview on Thursday. He found that rather odd, since it's just after Christmas. What kind of company were they? Chapter 2 Chapter 2 The rain continues to fall outside, likely to keep up for the next few weeks Darrel thought. All along the road is the christmas lights hanging on the tree's and poles on the street among other decorations, he knew it would be around Febuary until the city pulls them down. There were a few people walking down the street, and surprisingly a large ammount of traffic to Darrel; even if it was a Thursday he couldn't think of any company that would be open especially since it's between Christmas and New Years Day. "Ok, I'm done looking at your resume." Darrel, no longer paying attention to the outside, turns his head towards the employee. The room itself was even more basic than the case manager room, just a table and some chairs. The employee was not of suit or tie, although still gave a blue-coller vibe. She was a bit short and chubby, with her age around her 20-30's, of course Darrel found that normal. She then asked questions about the previous work he delt with, in which he explained as well as he could, for that he also found normal. "One final question" She asked " How are you with children?" 'That.... was not normal' Darrel thought, he was very surprised he got a question like that. It made him think of why children would be important to the job, he didn't notice any toys around the area or a play room when he walked in, so why would that matter? Then he thought 'Oh, maybe they have a Take your Daughter/Son to Work Day every so often.' But then he ran into another problem since most companies only do that once a year, but then he figured this company allows it every week. In the end, Darrel just told what he though he felt about kids, cause truth be told he really didn't know. "As long as they don't scream or play with my work, I'm fine with them" A large person in the other room watches over everything as the employee looks over the resume one last time. "Ok, I'll be right back." Said the employee, as she got up and left out of the room. The large person moves to the other side of the room waiting for the employee to come in, in which Darrel is oblivious to the large figures presents being though the large figure is looking through a two-way mirror. The employee walks in "He's got talent, but he's also got an additude." The large person then replies " So did everyone else, but they understood themselves and changed for it, and if anyone needs this it's him." "Alright" responded the employee "I'll get his desk ready." The employee re-enters the room with Darrel in, and explains "Congradulations, you're everything we wanted in a Accountant, we will be setting up your desk as of right now. We only need of one more thing from you, our boss would like to see you . He's on the second floor, center office opposite to the stairs." Darrel got up "Oh, thanks." And left the room. While heading down the area, he noticed all the Christmas decorations in the other offices; while the outside decorations he could understand, why hasn't the office taken down their stuff? Maybe he was being to scinical Darrel thought. Darrel knocked on the door "Hello, please come in." The person inside stated. Darrel opened the door, and looked around the office; there was lots paper everywhere, but it wasn't disorganised. Stacks of it was mostly on the outer rim of the room, some in the file cabinets, and one on his desk that was as high as his head. Darrel sat down, and had a good look at the man, while he was typing away on his computer. The man was fat, not the cubby kind that most men are like, but at least 500 pounds or so. His hair was white as snow, he wore glasses, his cheeks looked like they were blushing all the time, even his nose, and he always had a smile on his face. If Darrel didn't know any better, he would say he looked just like a Mall Santa, but this guy was... different. He had an aura to him, a sorta strange aura,
